November 29, 2005Hemmed EdgingInspired by Alison's use of a hem when knitting her Weasley sweater, I decided to give it a go. I referred to Ann Budd's Book of Sweater Patterns and upon first read was a little shocked that I didn't see the provisional cast on listed anywhere in the instructions. Now mind you I've never used this technique before, but I did remember reading that it involved knitting the last worked row to the cast-on row. I guess I figured a provisional cast-on would make that a bit easier and even after trying it with what I'd call a success, however, I still want to try it next time using a provisional cast-on unless someone would like to indicate to me why she choose not to include that. I'm aware that there may be a very good reason since I, having not ever done this before, probably don't know what I'm talking about, lol. Well enough jabber...take a look. ~i really like the finished look of it so far~ After I cast on with 2's, I went searching for 1's which I didn't think I even had so I could get on with it. Sometimes when trying something new, my "inner lazy knitter" only needs a minor setback to just go on without implementing the new technique. As I was rummaging through nomad needle land (boy, i need to organize my needles), I ran across this "vintage pair" gifted to me by a family member that used to knit a while ago. Check these out... ~i mean come on...40 cents...cool, huh~ And I guess that was before they even started using the horizontal straight line to accompany the "c" of the cent sign, huh. Don't know when I have seen it expressed that way at the moment.

November 28, 2005Looks the same, but really it is differentYesterday I swatched for my Weasley, today for Mini's. And though the yarn is different, its still a great red. I'm a big fan of Sisik. I love the feel of it and lets face it, Min is already asking for her "Hermione" sweater so knitting in on 2's is not in the cards. And yes, we know the "H" is usually for Harry, but her's will be for Hermione. Now I adore me some Felted Tweed (even knit on 2's), but I do like a sweater knit on US 5's (crystal palace bamboo straights) at 20stsx29rows too, especially since I've already been asked "have you started mine yet?". ~Dale of Norway Sisik Color 167~Mini's Weasely sweater swatch with moma swatch looking down from above~ Harry Potter is already influencing other aspects of our day. We have homework from school, then worksheets I pick up the local Teacher's Mart and then her choice (aren't I nice) of several words to practice her handwriting. And look at a few words that made the cut. Yesterday I moved Sorcerer's Stone to the top of my queue at Netflix, but with only one chapter left I don't think its going to arrive for our finish book at breakfast followed by movie night plans I envisioned. Aww...shucks and the site indicated that there is a short wait (due to demand no doubt). I should just buy them. Holding out for that full set with 1 million hours of deleted scenes, special commentary and full sized poster with collectors items, will probably take a while, huh. I may just have to go to the video store...are they still around, lol? No really...are they? I can hardly remember life before Netflix. Gabriel García Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera with a few works in progress (more on them later) I really enjoy reading and decided to pick up a book for myself and though I picked it up off of my bookshelf, I hope this will be the start of me being able to make time for pleasure reading on the regular.

November 27, 2005first off...I must begin by saying how nice it has been to have received some inquiries about where I've been or just lines dropped to say hi. I'll be responding to them individually real soon, but wanted to say that....first off. I can't find the words at the moment that do my feelings justice. I hope we can catch up soon. Thanks for thinking of me. Not quite sure where to begin knitwise, so I'll just start with today. That seems like a great place to start and then maybe I'll work my way back until I catch up with my knits in progress and bring them into the present. There's been a bit of progress, but I just need to collect all of the pieces and pull them together or figure out where I left off. Sounds a lot easier than I know it will be. I've been a bit overwhelmed with where to start, but gotta start somewhere I guess and quit draggin' my heels and get on with it. I know I'll be glad once I get in there and "just do it" already. Enough fubble...now what was I thinking about knitwise today? Well, it begins with an embarrassing revealing fact. I am....in fact...the last person on earth to read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Though I have seen the first couple of movies, I purchased a set of the books a while ago and decided that I would get into them when my mini expressed an interest in hearing them so we could experience the mayhem together. Well, a few weeks ago and now two chapters from the end has put us in the middle of a Harry Potter craze. And I have to admit, I love the fact that we are in this together. I read it to her every morning and evening and whenever she catches me without a task at had, she asks for "just a few pages, please" and as a mom moved by the magic word, I do oblige. I have to admit though, that I am just as eager to read what is next. So that brings me to this place... ~Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone~Alison's Weasley Sweater Pattern~Rowan Felted Tweed in Conker~ Big thanks to Alison who seems to provide guidance on the road to Weasely knitting and then some. I know this is just the beginning of many Potter knits since she has so kindly offered many patterns to the masses of adoring Potter fans. Don't know if you can tell, but my blocking board is a bit crowded. I have some Manos on the left and some Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Superchunky on the right. So much to block and this cold weather is really making for long drying times. Gotta move that blocking board away from the sliding glass door. That draft is quite chilly. Here's a better color representation of Rowan Felted Tweed in Conker. I got gauge on Addi US2's - 24 sts and 32rows to 4". I started out on 3's but after a few rows didn't like how loose the fiber was. I was looking through the stitches. I figured I would have to modify based on my gauge, but luckily it all worked out. A sweater on 2's will be quite a task for me I feel. Good thing I love this Rowan Felted Tweed. ~Oh Conker, how I love thee~ I just love this color and how light the fabric feels. Wish I could get my hands on some more of this color. I bought this a while back to make Rowan's Salina, (here is one that i drool over often) but I could not justify buying the book for only one pattern when I have such a backlog of must-knit patterns already in tow.
