November 29, 2005Hemmed EdgingInspired by Alison's use of a hem when knitting her Weasley sweater, I decided to give it a go. I referred to Ann Budd's Book of Sweater Patterns and upon first read was a little shocked that I didn't see the provisional cast on listed anywhere in the instructions. Now mind you I've never used this technique before, but I did remember reading that it involved knitting the last worked row to the cast-on row. I guess I figured a provisional cast-on would make that a bit easier and even after trying it with what I'd call a success, however, I still want to try it next time using a provisional cast-on unless someone would like to indicate to me why she choose not to include that. I'm aware that there may be a very good reason since I, having not ever done this before, probably don't know what I'm talking about, lol. Well enough jabber...take a look. ~i really like the finished look of it so far~ After I cast on with 2's, I went searching for 1's which I didn't think I even had so I could get on with it. Sometimes when trying something new, my "inner lazy knitter" only needs a minor setback to just go on without implementing the new technique. As I was rummaging through nomad needle land (boy, i need to organize my needles), I ran across this "vintage pair" gifted to me by a family member that used to knit a while ago. Check these out... ~i mean come on...40 cents...cool, huh~ And I guess that was before they even started using the horizontal straight line to accompany the "c" of the cent sign, huh. Don't know when I have seen it expressed that way at the moment. Posted by froggy at November 29, 2005 10:26 PM Comments
i've been wondering the same thing. i think a provisional CO would make it easier to do that merging row but i haven't actually seen it that way in any instructions yet! if you do try let us know. next time i have a chance i will too. i always seem to have a problem picking up the right stitch and eventually get off by a stitch or two (a total pain!) Posted by: jody at November 30, 2005 05:46 AMI wouldn't know anything about all that confusing stuff, as I'd never tried it myself. Heh. However, I am very intrigued by that container behind your needles with the cucumbers(?)in it. Posted by: isel at November 30, 2005 06:32 AMThe vintage needles are really cool. The font (or, er typeface - I can never remember the difference) is really great. Posted by: Amy at November 30, 2005 07:53 AMYaay! Froggie's back!! Good to see you! Posted by: Meg at November 30, 2005 10:43 AMI'm also joining the chorus of hurrahs for your return to blogdom. The hemmed edge does indeed look nice but dang, I CAN NOT beleive that you are looking to do a whole sweater on 1s and 2s! Strength to you! Posted by: Jenna at November 30, 2005 09:50 PMI'm so glad you're back! Posted by: erin at November 30, 2005 10:23 PMOh I'm so happy you're back! Bloglines didn't pick up any of your new posts though :( Your Weasley sweater looks like it's off a good start, the yarn is lovely! Posted by: lyn at December 1, 2005 01:40 AMat 40 cents, very cool needles. I'm curious too, what's in the jar behind the needles? Posted by: eyeleen at December 1, 2005 04:52 PMNice find. I've never tried a hemmed cast-on, but it looks pretty enough to tempt me. Posted by: Pioggia at December 1, 2005 07:01 PMHey girlie - your hem is looking cute! You can do one without a provisional cast-on, but I agree that it looks more elegant and makes more sense to do it with one. If you go over to Marnie's she has a great hem tutorial - I know because I thought the way she did her hems was so cool that I made her post about it last year! Miss you already - xox, Posted by: Julia at December 2, 2005 06:14 AMP.S. My bloglines picked you up. Maybe some of us subscribe to a different feed? I know it can be random. Posted by: Julia at December 2, 2005 06:16 AMUmmm... is the whole sweater to be done on 2's or just the hem? Because... well... that's just really intense. A whole sweater on 2s?? Sheesh. Posted by: Kathy at December 2, 2005 02:11 PMGlad to have you back! My bloglines picked you too! I'm glad about that. I have never done the provisional cast before. I was looking at it on the Tv show Knitty Gritty (on DIY) about a couple of weeks ago it aired on there how to do it. Posted by: Michelle at December 2, 2005 09:33 PM |
