June 09, 2005Oh, where have you been?~almost time for kitchener, huh~ I have been trying very hard not to drop any stitches when sock knitting cause I didn't really have a crochet hook small enough that would not distort the stitches and though I can pick up stitches using the knitting needles, I believe that when using a crochet hook the stitches tend to look more uniform (at least compared to when I pick up stitches using the needles. If its only a row or two the knitting needles suit me just fine, but any more than that and I call on the hook. Luckily I now have a hook point needle small enough to use with my sock. Boy, did it come in quite handy. ~at the first try-on i was quite pleased~ My initial excitement was over once I took a closer look at the toe. I tried to use some reinforcement thread and that extra thread really threw off my kitchener groove and I ended up with funky little pinch on the side. I do think that orange looks very close to one of the color threads going through the yarn. Now I just have to rip back and give it another go. I'm thinking I may just rip back a bit more to create more of an defined orange toe. What do you think? Or would that only look okay with a orange heel (and no, i'm not ripping that far back)? ~oh, don't look so sad, i'll knit you back up and knit you up a pal too~ Posted by froggy at June 9, 2005 10:45 PM Comments
You MUST try socks on two circulars. No dropped stitches. Those dpns are a bitch! My second sock I kitchenered like ten times and it still didn't look perfect. I can't imagine doing with extra thread. Love the colorway. Posted by: Cara at June 9, 2005 11:30 PMI love your socks, and this color is 'Miammm' Posted by: Annabel at June 10, 2005 03:07 AMI haven't tried adult socks yet but on the baby ones I've done, I used a 3 needle cast off on the WS of the work, is it doable on a bigger size? Posted by: Sophie at June 10, 2005 03:08 AMi don't really like green and i don't really like orange...so why is it that I LOVE this colour??? Posted by: jacqueline at June 10, 2005 04:56 AMI love this colorway! what a pretty sock! Posted by: Wendy at June 10, 2005 06:56 AMgorgeous yarn! oh my god! i have stopped kitchenering toes and started using a three-needle bindoff instead. i just turn the sock inside out through the toe opening, and voila! so much quicker and easier, and the bindoff ridge is hardly noticeable with the thin sock yarn. Posted by: kris at June 10, 2005 07:44 AMThe colors of your sock are great! I've never knit a sock, so I can't offer any advice. :( But I hope yours turn out great! Posted by: Tara at June 10, 2005 07:55 AMI think the sock looks great! And I love the colors! I'm sock crazy too! I'm knitting on da retro as I type! I love those socks...very pumpkiny- makes me want to hand out candy wearing them! I did my first/last toes with the grafting article from knitty...and I had success with that. Good Luck! Posted by: heather at June 10, 2005 08:12 AMWhat a pretty sock and I love the color ! Posted by: Christine at June 10, 2005 08:30 AMWhat a pretty, pretty colorway! From here, the toe looks fine :-). Posted by: Colleen at June 10, 2005 09:27 AMThe socks are lovely! I had never thought of using a 3-needle bind-off for the toe...now I'm dying to try it :) Posted by: Amy at June 10, 2005 09:39 AMcutie pie sock. an orange toe would be a cute surprise after kicking off your shoes(careful of my opinion though, my husband says i dress the baby like mimi bobeck). but, the sock really looks fine as is too. Posted by: corine at June 10, 2005 09:48 AMbeautiful sock!! i think more orange at the toe would be awesome (of course if you're ripping out anyway)... otherwise it looks great Posted by: kim at June 10, 2005 10:50 AMI actually didn't think it looked all that pinchy from the picture but I'm pretty lazy about ripping back so it's got to be something pretty major before I'd open up the toe on a lovely finished sock. :-) I love that colorway - it would look great with an orange toe if you do rip...and wouldn't take long to knit back up either. Posted by: Vicki at June 10, 2005 10:56 AMThe sock is perfect as is. Lovely colourway. And thanks for the lead on hook/point needles. I was wondering where to get some, short of a trip to Portugal. I just found Lacis' website thanks to your picture. BTW, I finished my Anouk matching hat and I'm very pleased with it, so now I also belong to the Anouk matching hat knitting sisterhood. :-) Posted by: Urraca at June 10, 2005 11:17 AMPersonally, I think the toe looks fine as it is. But then, when it comes to kitchener stitch, my policy is close enough! :P I think an orange toe without an orange heel would look cute too. But personally as I am not a huge fan of orange, I would just rip it back out and redo the kitchener on the toe with the yarn you have. Besides that... rocking socks! :) Posted by: Lisa P at June 10, 2005 11:49 AMThey look marvelous...since they'll be in a shoe the pinch won't matter a bit! Posted by: margene at June 10, 2005 12:05 PMWow, cool socks! I think the toe would look neat with the reinforcement - like twinkly toes :), totally unique. I've been using a darning egg with my toes - it seems to make the kitchenering easier for me. Lucky me, it's an ancestral egg :o) Posted by: Meg at June 10, 2005 12:28 PMYou socks look really good, Froggy! Love those colors. Posted by: Moni at June 10, 2005 01:08 PMI think it all looks fine! What a beautiful colorway! My first attempt at kitcheners stitch was a mess and I think it looked aweful. The second sock was much better... Posted by: Dani at June 10, 2005 01:12 PMI love the colorway! And, Koigu! MMMMMmmmm. My feet are jealous! I get the pinchy toes when I finish my socks, too. It disappears after washing/blocking every time. Posted by: Jen S. at June 10, 2005 02:09 PMWhen you said there was something wrong with the toe, I looked REALLY hard to try to figure out waht it was but I could not pick it out. I think it matches and looks great, I wouldn't worry a thing about it. Posted by: Jenna at June 10, 2005 04:03 PMI'm hard pressed to see that pinch, Froggy. But of course, this is from the woman with the huge brown blobbo sock. ;-) Posted by: Jenny at June 10, 2005 11:38 PMI think the washing/blocking will do the trick. Bravo on the socks! Posted by: Norma at June 11, 2005 07:47 AMWhy Froggy! It seems only yesterday you cast on for your first sock ever. Posted by: cari at June 11, 2005 11:34 PMGreat loooking sock! lovely color! Posted by: eyeleen at June 11, 2005 11:45 PMsocks on two circs my dear---i love 'em this way. and now i've just recently started my first pair toe up and i'm a happy camper. i think your socks look great and i'd just leave it as is. Posted by: amanda at June 12, 2005 11:24 AMLooking great!! For some reason, I'm not getting your Blogline updates. Posted by: Eilene at June 13, 2005 09:11 AMOh go on and rip back, it won't hurt...much. I ripped all the way back to the ribbing on one last weekend. And ok, so what if it was only the first pair of socks i ever, ever knit?? They turned out lovely...except for the 'ssk' decrease on the first one, i had done that wrong and just left it as it was...i have pics up now...go and look at my goofy sock and my good sock! LOL!! ;) ~Suz~ Posted by: GaiaGal (Suzanne) at June 16, 2005 06:16 PMCute sock! Your pictures always have such nice lighting. I think an orange toe would be okay, but it also looks fine the way it is. Posted by: c at June 19, 2005 09:24 PMI love your socks. The same thing happened with some toes on mine the other day. I just got the book on doing socks on two circular needle. I love this way of knitting socks. Posted by: Diane at June 20, 2005 10:40 PMI love the colourway!! |
