orange, orange and more orange

~ggh via mala...interesting stuff, huh~

no matter how often i use via mala, i'm still surprised by the loose strands that really have the potential to split on ya. can't tell you how i loved (yes, that 's sarcasm) to drop stitches just to go back and pick up a single (1/4th) strand. but i have to admit that i love the fabric that is created using two strands held together.

~you knew i couldn't resist another pic of aud (orange or not)~

can't thank you enough for all the kind words regarding aud. i thought she would never be finished. i got a chance to knit a bit last week during lunch. And this will be my third mottled sweater (yes this appears to be a problem cause i don't even see it as a problem, lol). but i should have knit it in these colors the first time as i wanted. i was trying too see other colors when looking at pattern pics at the time and obviously i saw and knit other colors, but still want it as pictured. but let me tell you, the third time is a charm (more on that later). anyway, i just love knitting in my office conference room at lunch. wish i had that wonderful natural lighting at home. i have also been working on rowan 27 strike. i have really found that rubber bands coupled with needles hold stitches much better than those point protectors especially when working on size us 2's. my favorite clover stitch holders (you know those blue ones) are needle size three. and that stretches out my stitches. and i just gotta get more bands for my needles like stacey.cool idea, huh. and thanks to nona and her helpful and encouraging posts on short rows, i now think i really get it. i have short rowed before hoping i was doing it right, but mostly just following the instructions and wishing for the best, but it makes a difference to really understand it and not have to even feel the need for my trusty vogue on the go reference book. i used the wrap method paired with my trusty double points, it made whipping out the perfect slant easy peasy. and having used the double points let it ready and prepped for a 3-needle bind off which leave the most perfect shoulder seam (in my opinion at the moment). i must have referred to that book every time i short-rowed before, but nona's great explanation cemented it for me. i gotta try the other methods she mentioned-the yarn-over short rowand the japanese short row. thanks again, nona.

~and now strike is blocking as she waits for her hood (that may be a while, lol)~

and more orangey goodness showed up in this weeks crafts...papier-mâché giraffes. what a transformation. it was so cool to let mini run the craft start to finish with minimal direction. she knows her waaaay with the papier-mâché (yes, i find that hilarious...i need sleep) i'm obviously tired as i'm still chuckling. oh and by the way, the tail (yeah, i know...not the best shot, but you can see it right?) was her idea totally. she used confetti from a birthday party. it started falling and she went straight for the floor asking the kids to stop stepping on it as it fell from the ceiling. she put it all (and i mean all) in bag and asked the "party mom" if she could take it home and use it for crafts "cause i'm not wasteful...am i mom". don't think it came out the way she meant it, huh, lol. maybe i stress the reuse, waste not, a bit too much. that's my girl though..love her to pieces.

~aren't they cute (the orange one is gerger and the purple is purperly...named by mini of course~

and to round out the orange, i started a little orange ribby tank for the linen drape-along i joined a loooong while back. this may be the summer of ribs, lol.

~i've used one ball so far...very interesting yarn that is very different from anything i have ever used~

I don't know about this though...its lookin' a bit small (wasn't i just here before). seeing it there on top of strike didn't help much. mini suggested I use it as a saddle for gerger. i really don't want to rip it though. i used us 1's and 2's so far and am not crazy about this particular orange on me, but i'm hoping she'll warm up to it (seeing that its not pink). she held it up to her and said she prefers the ruffle to be on bottom, not the top. "what ruffle", i asked. come to find out she meant the top which is currently held by a strand of yarn (producing what she sees as a ruffle, hmmm). i guess i may be picking up stitches at the bottom and ruffling it up when i'm done. hope that will work with a ribby sweater. what do you think?

Orange indeed! Stike's looking good. The Linen Drape... you know what it needs (if Mini says no). How do you like the yarn otherwise? Recommended? (feel free to answer that blogging)

Tell Mini her art is absolutely fabulous! I wish she could come to birthday parties with us and shame a few people as they fill trash bag after trash bag with perfectly good paper, bows and bags. Bravo.

The orange is so vividly beautiful. It is more than just interesting!

Posted by: la chica alta at May 20, 2005 09:28 PM

Oh ... you caught the orange from Claudia!

Posted by: Agnes at May 20, 2005 09:57 PM

Love mottled looks too. And all of your pictures. You're amazing.

Posted by: Lauren at May 20, 2005 10:21 PM

Lovin' all of it! Purpley. That's the kind of name my nephew would give something. Does it squeak? Call it squeaky!

Posted by: Cara at May 20, 2005 10:30 PM

Well, you're keeping busy! Ha ha! I love the WIP you've got going and I love that you're crafting with little mini. She seems like a fun one to have around. :) Again, Audrey is stunning.

I am so totally impressed with Mini!! I'm having fun working with orange myself right now. I love it!

Posted by: Stacie at May 20, 2005 10:54 PM

I love the giraffes - they have so much character!

Posted by: tacha at May 21, 2005 04:47 AM

Gee, how much via mala do you have?? ;-)

Posted by: Iris at May 21, 2005 07:41 AM

Hahaha, oh I really hope she was picking it up piece by individual piece. High comedy. That reminds me of the Bubbi in "Crossing Delancy" who grabs at her granddaughter's recently opened present saying:

"NICE PAPER, something to save!"

She puts it in a closet full of neatly folded, though slightly rumpled, wrapping paper.

I heartily approve!

Posted by: claudia at May 21, 2005 09:21 AM

Love all the orange--especially the red/orange combo of the via mala. I think ruffles would be great on the bottom of the ribby sweater (smart mini!).

Posted by: anmiryam at May 21, 2005 10:46 AM

lovin the orange, and those giraffes are just plain silly and fun!...I don't think I mentioned audrey, just beautiful!

Posted by: cara at May 21, 2005 10:51 AM

Love, love, love! That mottled sweater...where do I purchase the pattern? Also, I would surely like to steal that Audrey...just gorgeous!

Posted by: Nickie at May 21, 2005 01:00 PM

Hey lady! :) If I were you, I would never take Audrey off. It is beautiful, and the color is stunning! Great work on it... and now this lovely orange creation--I love the 2 strands together.

Love the giraffes!

Hope you are having a good weekend!

Posted by: Lolly at May 21, 2005 04:11 PM

Goodness! What's with all the orange I'm seeing all over the blogs?

Posted by: Erika at May 21, 2005 06:15 PM

Thanks for the compliments on my baby booties. I lvoe the sleeveless rib top with the ties, what magazine did you get the pattern from? Happy knitting.

Posted by: Judy at May 21, 2005 07:21 PM

I love those colors and how they work together.
That is a very cool pattern.

Posted by: isel at May 21, 2005 11:00 PM

Very cute giraffes - Mini definitely has a creative flair. I love the orange and red together, it's going to look really good.

Posted by: Mary at May 22, 2005 07:30 AM

Orange always makes me feel happy :) But an orange giraffe is the best ;)

Posted by: Sandra at May 22, 2005 08:29 AM

I love that tank...what book is that in? And your Audrey is STUNNING. Really nice job!

We've got a day at home tomorrow, so I sense there will be giraffes in my future--my little person just saw them and informed me we are making them. Oh, ooookayyyy... :-)

Posted by: Lee Ann at May 22, 2005 03:12 PM

Yummy orange! Will look incredible on you.

Shall we think of an "orange catchphrase"...um "Orange, the new black". Uh...how about "Orange Fever, Catch It!" Okay, I'll stop.

Such a full post I hardly know where to begin! Love the orangey stuff, especially the papier- mache giraffes! Audrey looks great!

Posted by: Norma at May 23, 2005 09:52 AM

You inspired me to knit an Audrey...must have one soon. The giraffes couldn't be cuter! And here you are one more person in love with orange, hummm.

Posted by: margene at May 23, 2005 11:35 AM

You have been super busy! I love two yarns held together too, it does create an incredible colorway and texture that you just can't get from a multi-colored yarn.

I really like the design for that ribby tank. Too cute!

Posted by: Dani at May 23, 2005 07:22 PM

Oh, your mini makes me laugh! Re-use, reduce, recycle.. she's serious about it, isn't she? Orange is such a sunny color, too bad I look terrible in it.

Posted by: Pioggia at May 23, 2005 07:26 PM

ooo! I like your color combo! My kinda colors right now! Delicious color ain't it! :)

Posted by: lauray at May 24, 2005 03:12 AM

Froggy, your posts are just so much fun. That mini is a crack-up. I'm definitely enjoying all your orange projects, and those giraffes are so cool!

Posted by: Jenny at May 24, 2005 05:56 AM

Wow you've been super busy! I love the projects you are working on, is that last one a rowan pattern? Those giraffs are so beautiful! I do really like those via mala's together. I haven't tried that yet...

Posted by: Alana at May 24, 2005 08:47 AM

Love, love, love the orange and all the things you have going. But I must say, the giraffs are my favorite! Glad the short rows were of help, I do love my short rows...

Posted by: nona at May 24, 2005 11:55 AM

I love ALL of it, Froggy! Remind me how old your mini is? Because my Wee C is pretty crafty and maybe it's time to try some mache'!

Posted by: maggi at May 24, 2005 12:21 PM

I'm lovin' all the orange! Even with all the splitiness you speak of, the via mala is gorgeous! I just want to pet it ^_^ Oh, and those giraffs are the cutest! I love the names too

Posted by: Heather at May 24, 2005 12:24 PM

I love orange, and your current projects are very cool in it. I can't get over Mini's giraffes, either - they are spectactular!

Posted by: julia at May 24, 2005 02:13 PM

I'm a big fan of the mottled yarns myself. Have recently searched the web for various varieties of this yarn and have found it by using the terms marled, mouline. The two yarn approach looks very nice. I love the giraffes. My favorite craft project in elementary school was when each of us made a big papier mache totem pole. Imagine a whole classroom getting messy with papier mache and then cleaning up afterwords. It was so fun.

Posted by: Elizabeth at May 24, 2005 03:03 PM

You've been BUSY! Audrey is gorgeous - I've got to say that right off. Perfect fit! And the giraffes - well, they are just the cutest thing ever - "purperly" - hee hee! I really like that ribby orange tank too...nice and casual for summer.

Posted by: Vicki at May 24, 2005 04:31 PM

okay, you really are the fastest knitter ever. are you splitting the via mala in half and using the two halves together, or are you using 8ply? i'm thinking in half.... And what book is that for the linen drape? the old linen drape book, or an old rowan mag? so cute, but I'm really loving strike! it reminds me of an old rebecca pattern...i'll look it up, it was on the cover a few years back, a hooded sleeveless top... hmmm.

Posted by: xtina at May 24, 2005 04:40 PM

Hey!! That was me at Panera. I knew I'd seen that orange sweater somewhere, but wasn't sure.
Then I came back and checked and TADA, that WAS you. It was nice meeting you. I'm getting Netflix right now.

Posted by: isel at May 24, 2005 10:20 PM

Very beautiful orange, I love the ribby tank pattern !
Please tell Mini she is an artist, her giraffes are simply stunning and so cute !!

Posted by: Christine at May 25, 2005 05:40 AM

I love that orange!

Mini's giraffes are adorable!

Posted by: amy at May 25, 2005 08:28 AM

you are a knitting machine. you keep me motivated. i'm itching to knit a cardigan but haven't picked one yet. hmm..

Posted by: erika at May 25, 2005 04:00 PM

I just finished Grace from last year's Knitty. I did a google search and see that you finished it and I'm wondering if you can tell me what "technique" you used to seam the top fronts to bottom front. It has me baffled. Thanks. Nora

Posted by: Nora at May 26, 2005 01:38 PM

I love the giraffes, and the confetti-saving behaviour! What a thoughtful girl! ^_^ I'm also a huge fan of knitting two strands together at once. It makes for a gorgeous design. Good luck with your tank!

Posted by: Missy at May 26, 2005 03:01 PM

Oooo, Audrey looks so good knitting up that fiery two-strand via mala! And I love Strike - so sporty - and the giraffes. I made a papier mache giraffe myself when I was not so much older than Mini. :)

Posted by: Sarah at May 26, 2005 07:52 PM

orange...orange orange...splitty yarn makes me nuts...cathay is a bit splitty fyi
