how much energy does it have?

Can't tell you how many times I've been asked that question this week.

Mini has consistantly expressed an interest in spinning. Though I'm all for it, I'm a bit puzzled 'cause its not that we have been exposed to a lot of spinning. But I agreed to look into it if she exhibited a true interest that could stand the test of time and she followed that up with numerous requests a few times a week for quite a while now. So a spinning lesson was in order (not from me of course). We only went in to purchase a book and a spindle, but a wonderful woman took mini by the hand, showed her a bit of roving, picked out a spindle, got down on one knee and helped her get started. It was quite a treat to watch. Unfortunately the name of that lovely person escapes me at the moment, but I hope we are fortunate enough to run into her again.

I'm hoping this new spinning will replace the ol' spinning. Ever since mini was small she would sit on my foot and request a spin. How could I say no? She loves to get going and going...gone. If only I could spin my cares away like that.

I'm hoping I can come up with some roving projects for we hit snags like this one. Can anyone recommend and roving projects for wee ones until I can figure out how to get that bit connected again? For now she pretty content spinning until it breaks, but I'm not sure how long her patience will hold up. Does this mean I should try and learn to spin...oh boy?

How cool to have a daughter so enamoured with spinning of all descriptions! I wish her all the best with her interests!

Here's a good resources with video -- maybe you can sit down with her and watch them? :)

videos of just about everything related to spinning

I love the pictures and I love how she's decided that that's what she wants to do! I love it!

It isn't too tricky to "reconnect" (though it is what hung me up for a while)... you hold the new piece perpendicular to the broken piece and carefully pull the old piece while you spin the spindle... the new pieces will get "caught" and spin right in. (This is definitely easier to do than write... but the key for me is to do it slowly, so I spin and then park the spindle so I can focus on pulling the fiber). The end doesn't have to be long at all.

In the mean time, how about some thrummed mittens for next year? She can help you pull out pieces of the roving and shape them into little figure eights, while you knit 'em up!

awwww, your little spinner is cuuute! This could be a great thing - she spins the yarn, and you knit it! perfect!

The spinning, it is calling you. Answer the phone.

Posted by: claudia at May 27, 2005 10:33 PM

Hey, give it a try, you might like it too. There's enough websites on spinning and drafting to keep you and Mini going.

How old is mini? She is just such a gorgeous little girl. I can't believe how well she is doing with the spinning!

Fantastic job Mini. I am about to start some spinning myself and seeing your daughter's progress has inspired me no end.

Love that last photo: have spindle, will travel.

Posted by: Iris at May 28, 2005 06:12 AM

That is so cute that she is interested in spinning! That last picture is super gorgeous... Maybe you should take a spinning class together! I have heard of a few kids/adults classes in the Boston area..

Posted by: Dani at May 28, 2005 06:45 AM

Too cute! I never get tired of pictures of Mini!!!

Posted by: Tara at May 28, 2005 08:07 AM

Wow!

You know that it is going to take Mini a while to get through that enormous roll of rovings! LOL ;-)

I can only echo those who have said you have to overlap the two ends of roving and pinch the top of the "loose end" to the rest of the roving then spin the spindle and hope! It will be a bit lumpy at first but as Mini works it out, she'll be able to join new roving on and hardly notice what she's done.

I see a fabulous family business in the works. Mini spinning the yarn, you knitting it up - you can tie dye the yarn together! Sign me up! I want to be your first customer!

Mini is an inspiration to me - she reminds me so much of my nephew who constantly asks about knitting. She a bit ahead of him, so I look to her for what might come down the pike. Although, I have to admit, if he ever asked about spinning I'd about fall over.

Have a great weekend. Thanks so much for sharing Mini with us. She's gorgeous!

Oh, that is wonderful. She must have the genes built in!

Posted by: Norma at May 28, 2005 09:07 AM

Awww! so cute that she has taken up spinning :)

Posted by: Monica at May 28, 2005 09:27 AM

It figures that Mini would pick up a fiber related hobby! She can spin your yarn! Adorable!

Posted by: la chica alta at May 28, 2005 10:08 AM

How great that you can share a fiber art with her... Maybe next she'll want to knit her handspun? Or does she already know how to knit?

Posted by: cari at May 28, 2005 10:16 AM

Mini is so freakin cute I can't stand it! LOL
You guys should kool-aid dye some roving together for her to spin. I bet she'd love that. :)

Posted by: Elabeth at May 28, 2005 10:19 AM

She is just so adorable, it makes my ovaries hurt. :D

Posted by: korin at May 28, 2005 12:55 PM

OoooOo...yeah, Kool-Aid dyed roving would be super fun for her!

Posted by: Christie at May 28, 2005 02:01 PM

Mini is such a cutie! I think it's wonderful that she wants to spin.

Posted by: eyeleen at May 28, 2005 02:27 PM

She's great! I would love to take up spinning one of these days myself :)

Posted by: emy at May 28, 2005 02:31 PM

That is so wonderful that Mini wants to spin! She is just too cute holding that spindle.

Posted by: Erica at May 28, 2005 04:14 PM

good for her!

Posted by: cara at May 28, 2005 04:54 PM

Mini is sooooooo cute....good luck with the spinning!

Posted by: Ingrid at May 28, 2005 04:59 PM

Awww... that's like the cutest thing ever! I love your Mini and it's good to start 'em young :-) Hahaha, soon she'll be having fibre obsessions and will take over your stash.

Posted by: lyn at May 29, 2005 10:18 PM

Beware the interest in yarn! A friend of mine has a daughter who apparently now thinks that her mother's stash is her stash. That might be taking the mother/daughter love too far :) Mini looks awfully proud of her new spindle... very sweet.

Posted by: Amelia at May 30, 2005 07:12 AM

She's so pretty.
OK, take a look at Simply Felt, a book that came out this year and has multiple projects based on roving and not knitting. It's a simple technique where you take some roving, shrink it and then cut/sew it into shapes. I'm thinking bookmarks, purses, something small with minimal shaping.

Posted by: Sandra at May 30, 2005 08:03 AM

Your daughter is just too cute! I love the fact that she wanted to try spinning... great post!

Posted by: marichan at May 30, 2005 10:37 AM

spinning now? you're way more ambitious than i am in knitting. can't wait to see what beautiful things you spin. mini too! :)

Posted by: erika at May 30, 2005 12:52 PM

Mini pictures never fail to make me smile! Thanks!
Joining the fluff in isn't too hard - I spread out the stuff from the spindle & the new & hold it all together (trying to blend the hairs) & keep going.

Posted by: Meg at May 30, 2005 06:14 PM

That's so cool she wanted to spin!

Posted by: jen at May 31, 2005 02:39 AM

CUTE!!!!!! That last photo is stunning. You could totally put that in a gallery. I also think that a little girl wanting to learn to spin is incredible. She's really something.
