Put a chopstick in her...she is done!

~wanna see the back~

Project Specs:
Pattern: Debbie Bliss Lara
Suggested/Used Yarn: Debbie Bliss Silk Alpaca (red shade 11)
Needle Size: US 6 (or was that US 5?)

The title reflects the fact that I was completely inspired by a fabulous Lara that I saw at six and a half stitches. Such a cool idea, I just had to try it. Though her version seems so cool and uncontrived. I look like I have a long stick of Pocky (love that stuff) across my chest to insure an easy, convenient snack later so I don't know if this it is a look I can pull off even though I have worn it three times already, hee, hee (and will be wearing it again the next chance i get). Also, I saw the pic a while back and didn't go back to revisit it until after I took these pics to realize the placement has a lot to do with why I'm not too crazy about the center front look that I'm sporting. The over to the side a bit looks fantastic but I don't think I have enough extra width in my Lara to pull carry that off. I was hoping to use one of the 'sticks I have on hand, but none of them (that matched) were thin enough to make it comfortably though the stitches. I knit Lara a bit tighter than suggested and knit one size up from the size I would normally knit and didn't want to risk putting too many random holes in it, but the current 'stick is working quite well. I have worn it just about everyday since I finished (just about = every) and I'm pretty happy with the shorter length and tighter fit compared to the pattern pic and the lack of holes that will appear using the thinner sticks given that I never get the placement in the same spot. I have to admit that I was thinking after knitting it twice before that I would not like the possibility of another oversized sweater as I have so many, but this suits my liking . I wouldn't mind a cotton one (and NO i am not knitting another lara anytime soon though I may knit the kid-sized version on the cover of Junior Knits called Mia, Cotton Angora book Lola, Special Knits Ribbed Jacket(yeah, i know that's the same pic, hee, hee). Hmmm...so it appears that Lara (Mia, Lola and ribbed jacket) can work for so many sizes/gauges and now I'm sold on it as I love this sweater and want a light one to rock year round lara-wear. I never realized how great it is not to feel a shoulder seam...very comfy. I wanted to knit Mia upon seeing it on the cover instantly, cut couldn't imagine Mini having a cardi without buttons, but I think something flowery as a closure will do the job. I ended up heading to World Market (great store) to get thinner 'sticks.

~glad to be done...doing the happy dance...and ready to take lara on a test wear~

We've had a few chilly days lately and it was great to get some wear outta Lara and one my favorite tee's...oh and this one too.

Posted by: Karen at May 1, 2005 09:12 AM

Lara is awesome! Perfect color & fit. (For a change. Pffft.)

I really want to make this, but it's the only thing in the entire book, and I can't see buying the whole damn thing for a single pattern.

Posted by: mindy at May 1, 2005 09:14 AM

Oh she's gorgeous! I keep seeing knock offs in the chain stores here, it's a great pattern.

Posted by: Jo at May 1, 2005 09:15 AM

Yeah. Lara is done. And she looks fabUlous, fanTastic, and you must be Happy to be finally done. I know I was.

Looks great froggy....

yeaahhh your lara is amazing !! wonderful job !! i need one too NOW ;-))))

Posted by: Annabel at May 1, 2005 09:23 AM

Wonderful Job! And as I always say, the great knit is punctuated by how HAPPY you look wearing it (I can see the smile, even if I can't see the smile - know what I mean? Of course you do!) which makes it all the more fabulous.

Have fun wearing it everyday. I say, if it gets hot, crank up the AC and wear it around the house!

Posted by: Cara at May 1, 2005 09:33 AM

Beautiful - this is the first Lara that I have really liked! It must be the pattern mods you made. Looks great on you.

Posted by: Jackie at May 1, 2005 09:44 AM

Oh gosh, is that gorgeous. Lara looks so awesome with tees.

"leila...leila..." (the sound of Lara calling out to my fickle ass)

Wow, your Lara looks great! It also looks rather comfertable as well, nice and fitted. Anyways, great sweater!

Posted by: Alexa at May 1, 2005 10:47 AM

Gorgeous! Another fabulous sweater to add to your ever-expanding wardrobe!

Posted by: susan at May 1, 2005 10:53 AM

Oh love the colour and the swing in your Lara. I was knitting something in a similar colour and felt like changing my mind about it - it's not a colour I'm used to wearing, but after seeing your Lara, I'm going to stick with the colour.

Posted by: erin at May 1, 2005 10:59 AM

I agree with Jackie... the pattern is intriguing, but I haven't been really *inspired* the knitted versions I have seen around. Yours, however, looks great! The closer crop all around seems to make it a much more minimalist looking sweater, and less like a bathrobe looking sweater.

World Market! Yeah! I am getting one mere blocks from my house, I can hardly stand the wait. :)

Posted by: chelsea at May 1, 2005 11:01 AM

it looks fantastic! beautiful colour choice!

Posted by: caro at May 1, 2005 11:20 AM

Posted by: Lauren at May 1, 2005 12:02 PM

Froggy dear, I know Lara has been giving you a headache since we met way back in February--so glad to see you whipped her into shape, and made her your beautiful FO! Fabulous work--love the photos! The chopstick idea is just grand!

Hope all is well :)

Posted by: Lolly at May 1, 2005 12:05 PM

The closer fit of this Lara really works for you. It looks stunning!

Posted by: Karma at May 1, 2005 12:13 PM

Which colour is closer to reality? The brighter one on the top or the darker one? I like the brighter one ... very special. And I love pocky too.

Posted by: Agnes at May 1, 2005 12:31 PM

Oh, that is great! You did a neat job! I've got that same sweater on my "wanna-knit" list. Even the Mia you mentioned! Love that style.
Looks great on you!

Posted by: heather at May 1, 2005 01:40 PM

Wow, it really looks fabulous and I'm sure it's even better in person! I lust after that color of alpaca silk, too, it's so rich. Congrats on another great knit!

Posted by: Jenna at May 1, 2005 01:47 PM

That's such a pretty color for Lara, and she looks great! And I haven't thought about Pocky for a long time, but yummm!

Posted by: korin at May 1, 2005 02:22 PM

Posted by: Liz at May 1, 2005 03:29 PM

Oh yeah, I like the shirt too. Neat.

My gray Lara is blushing with envy! It looks fantastic in red.

Posted by: cari at May 1, 2005 06:56 PM

wow i love it!

Posted by: tina at May 1, 2005 08:43 PM

Beautiful! I started Freida from the Alpaca Silk book instead of Lara, but I now may be changing my mind back. thanks for the inspiration!

Posted by: Ashley at May 1, 2005 10:47 PM

Let me join the chorus--your Lara is beautiful. Both fit and color a great success. BTW I made Nina from the same book in teal Alpaca Silk--another cuff to cuff kimono style design. I really loved it but it came out HUGE. I couldn't really tell how big until I was sewing it together. So I frogged the whole thing (!) and will try again when I recover. But I think I'll make a Lara first--perhaps if I can size it properly the Nina redo will be simpler.

Posted by: Nan at May 2, 2005 12:23 AM

Yay yay Froggy! Lara came out so well! The bad knitting days are over, I can feel it!!!

Posted by: Jenny at May 2, 2005 03:29 AM

Simply gorgeous! Love the pattern and the color! Fantastic job, congrats :) !

Posted by: Sandra at May 2, 2005 04:18 AM

Posted by: Tara at May 2, 2005 07:53 AM

Someone's having herself a Lara party! Woot woot!!

Looks great. And I'm thinking of making Mia for my daughter, using a frog as a closure.

Posted by: Iris at May 2, 2005 08:47 AM

A finished Lara! I love it in that color!

Looks really good. It's a nice fit..remember when you were doubtin the fit? :)

Bravo Froggy Dear!

I missed it!! I noticed my bloglines isnt working on you! well anyways the lara is beautiful and i really love that red! it looks great on you!

Posted by: erika at May 2, 2005 10:58 AM

Love the Lara and all the great pictures -- especially the dance moves!

Posted by: nona at May 2, 2005 12:22 PM

Well it looks incredible. I have played with that red and is it lovely! I have heard alpaca grows so maybe knitting it smaller was a smart idea. If it does grow it won't become over sized.

I'll bet it is nummy against your skin!

Posted by: Laurie at May 2, 2005 12:44 PM

Looks great Froggy! You might have just given me the push to actually start Mia. I bought the yarn and the pattern months ago. Keep on dancing that happy dance!

Posted by: Risa at May 2, 2005 02:41 PM

Now I want one!! That looks fabulous on you and I LOVE the red. I think I like it a bit smaller like you have done it - I'm easily lost in large sweaters. I just may have to order this as my very first fall project.

Posted by: Vicki at May 2, 2005 03:07 PM

Wow, I think that is my fave Lara I've seen. Been knitting some random Cotton Angora sale balls into psycho-square cushion, and it IS nice stuff. . .

Posted by: maggi at May 2, 2005 03:22 PM

poo- for some reason bloglines is not updating your site for me anymore. but lara looks so fabulous. that color is gorgeous on you!

Posted by: thuy at May 2, 2005 07:00 PM

Great job. That is a beautiful Lara!

Posted by: isel at May 2, 2005 07:45 PM

It looks fantastic. I started mine two weeks ago out of Rowan's all Season's cotton....

Posted by: Morgan at May 2, 2005 09:36 PM

Lara fits great and the length is perfect on you!
I love how this pattern can be adapted and looks great open or closed, longer or shorter. Love the pocky idea too. :)

Posted by: joy at May 2, 2005 10:35 PM

Lara is great! I bet it is so snuggly and warm. Alpaca Silk is the best! Your tshirts are very funky, too. Froggy, you have the best style.

Posted by: Liz at May 2, 2005 11:14 PM

Your sweater is very beautiful, you look as a top model in it.

Posted by: Dominique at May 3, 2005 04:28 AM

Lara looks terrfic. I love the colour.

Posted by: tacha at May 3, 2005 07:38 AM

It's my first time commenting on your lovely blog - I just had to say how much I love your Lara! It makes me very glad I've just started one of my own. Mine is Mission Falls 1824 Cotton, which I highly recommend if you do decide to make a cotton version - too bad it's being discontinued!

Posted by: Sarah at May 3, 2005 08:34 AM

You are a rock star! Lara is such a flattering sweater. Go on, knit yourself a cotton one too! And don't you just love Alpaca Silk?

Posted by: Sharlyn at May 3, 2005 10:42 AM

Lara is awesome--love that red!

Posted by: Heidi at May 3, 2005 10:44 AM

BEAUTIFUL!!!!! ---both you and the sweater :o)

Posted by: amanda at May 3, 2005 05:44 PM

Lara looks gorgeous!! I never would have thought about this sweater if I didn't see yours and the other one you linked. Once this semester is over I may have to make me one. :) How do you knit so much? You get a LOT done.

Love it.

Posted by: erika at May 3, 2005 06:41 PM

IT LOOKS AWESOME!!! You better be doing the happy dance :-)

Posted by: Becky at May 4, 2005 12:55 PM

LOVE that color! Great job with the sizing. Fun tee's too. Thanks for all the pics.

As message #82, please don't answer -- rest your hands for Mia in something washable.

Posted by: Nancy at May 4, 2005 01:48 PM

OMG... how could I have missed the premier of your Lara??? It's beautiful and the colour looks great on you. You are awesome!

Posted by: lyn at May 4, 2005 05:30 PM

Ooh, gorgeous! I love the stick idea, be it Pocky or chopsticks.

Posted by: Silvia at May 4, 2005 10:34 PM

Smashing, dear.

Posted by: Rachael at May 5, 2005 08:28 AM

Hi Froggy - I'm currently working on a Lara myself, and I'm wondering what sort of selvage you used for the hems. Did you do anything special, or just go according to the pattern? I'm not using Alpaca Silk (my super fuzzy, stretched out scarf in Alpaca Silk warned me), and I substituted Mission Falls merino wool. It's curling up pretty good on the edges, so I'm wondering what sort of selvage stitch might save me a tortuous blocking session...

Any advice would be great!
Thanks,
Lisa

Great, great Lara! I never gave that sweater another thought until I saw your version! I think the color is so beautiful. Hmmmm, how can I finagle some more yarn? I don't think my husband will approve. (I love Pocky too!)

Posted by: marichan at May 6, 2005 10:18 AM

Now that is a sweater I love. The top underneath is pretty rockin', too!

Wow, comment #96.......just wanted to say I'm admiring your Lara and think I'll make one for my moi-meme.......I prefer the more fitted look of yours to the looser/lanker one on the six-and-a-half-stitches site. Love your blog!!!

Posted by: Sara at May 9, 2005 08:13 AM

Hi there- well, I guess I'm #97- I love your lara- the colour is absolutely divine, and I like the smaller fit too.
Alison (six and a half stitches) has been practicing wearing chopsticks for as long as I've known her (many years)- it's a fine art. Sounds like you are picking it up fine!
