coming full circle

two socks~one ball~does not a pair make(at least, not yet)
I'm having a bit of trouble with working through my second and I guess third sock (or it could be 2a and 2b). I have this weird thing with yarn that usually works for me. If the yarn (putting blame on yarn again) is not going to behave, I'll try knitting from the other end. I guess resulting in a little change in the original knitting karma. That is also coupled with the fact that I don't like to rip until I can identify for sure exactly what I don't like about a knit, documented the gauge/notes on a piece of paper somewhere and sometimes its I just want to compare what I don't like to what I'm supposed to like better (dontcha love mad run-ons, lol). And for some reason, it usually works for me. However in this case I have ended up with two socks coming outta one ball and neither one are working for me (or mini for that matter).
My second and somehow third sock is not working up as easy as the first for me. It appears to be a little big though only slightly in comparison to my best fitting store-bought sock. I even went further as to try it on off the needles which made it feel really big. Of course, now looking back I'm thinking that I could have just made it a bit shorter 'cause when I pulled it toward the heel it seemed to magically work to the tighten the fit, but that was after I have already committed to resizing the toe, so there was no lookin' back at that point (wait a minute, that toe looks fine in the pic below..where is that paper). I have begun to realize that I am a bit more picky with the fit of a sock as opposed to a sweater. I will enjoy without complaint a sweater that is a tad off in fit (a little bit big here or there doesn't offset the a sweater on the whole), but with socks a little bit seems like a big bother (to me) and worth a rip and reknit. And for some reason I'm diggin' this tick tack sound even without the promise of a sock everytime (or am i just trying to sike myself out). I am wondering though if my pickiness is just me missing a thing called lycra. If so, I don't really thing making a super tight sock will take away this "umm does this really fit" feeling.

definitely feeling the "this chair is too big" on this one
Okay, so the second try at the second sock or is that the third (yeah, i have confused myself with that bit too) ended up way to small, but I went on thinking "I planned on knitting mini a pair o' socks anyway right". And though it was going quite well after I realized this sock is too small for me but perfect for mini, after working the heel and commenting to someone that I am reknittting the toe on mine, mini announced that the toe on her sock just doesn't work for her either, humph. A coincidence...I think not. Actually, the toe bed is a bit boxy and these socks are meant for wearing so let the customization begin (again). But on the positive, the heel is a perfect fit so let me jot that down on paper so I can dup the stitch count and such there.

followed by "this chair is too small
Well guess I want goldilocks socks 'cause I really want it to fit just right and so does mini. So I guess back to the drawing board. However, I'll be making my own socks and not crashin' someone else crib wrecking their stuff.

yep, you guessed it...full circle
Can I get a rip, rip? (ok, not as catchy as a whoop, whoop).

I know what you mean about the fit of socks as opposed to a sweater. It's got to be perfect or they just won't do so you may rip rip and I'll give you a whoop whoop! It's a pretty colour though.
I knew there was a reason I didn't knit socks - there is no way I'm patient enough for all this!
Goldilocks socks--too funny! I love that yarn you are using... it is so pretty! It kind of reminds me of playdo (that is a good thing!)
Take care, Miss Froggy--
RIP! RIP! But the color is so much fun!!
Maybe it's a good thing I lost those other two dpns. My one sock is still just sitting on the remaining three needles. I can tell myself how proud I am that I turned that dang heel, but I don't ever have to wear it (hence I don't have to find out it doesn't fit!)
I'm sorry you had to rip, but you learned a lot right? Is that even consolation anymore? ;-)
Here's hoping your sock endeavour has a happily ever after.
:) you just gotta find that sock groove.
Once you get the right sock formula for your foot, you will be good to go forever. So keep at it.
I like my socks to fit tightly because they loosen up in the wearing. For my size 7 foot, I cast on 60 stitches on size 1's. Also, differently shaped feet need different heels and toes. My toes are very square, so a short row toe works great, and a short row heel fits me fine. Some folks swear heel flap heels fit them much better. For more pointy toes, try a star decrease (if you have Folk Solks, there are a million different heels & toes in there).
Ahhhh, so that's the answer? What Claudia just said? I have NOT the patience to "find my formula." Arggh.
i use the basic sock pattern from Folk Socks and that works pretty well for me. i do, however, use a different toe and heel. i like the dutch heel and the round toe. gives me a very snug, comfy fit. the great thing about that book is that she gives instructions for several different toes and heels that work for different feet and fits.
All I can say is good luck & don't give up! I'd help but I wear a size 5 1/2...tiny eh?
Love that yarn! I'm the same way with socks- they have to fit just right. If you've got too much sock to stuff in your shoe, or they are cutting off your circulation, you end up thinking about your feet all day. And who wants to think about feet all day?
you are working so hard and that yarn is so pretty you are definitely going to have some just right socks in the end. hang in there!
I agree with socks needing to fit. I hate having sock even a bit too big. They have to be tight and comfy. The bf wears socks that just stretch out and most of the time he doesn't even have the heel where it's supposed to be. It makes me nuts just to look at it! But I'm insane really lol. I love the way the colors worked out in the first one though, so cool!
Damn, you'll get it soon enough and then you'll know what works. Keep at it..it will be worthwhile.
funny--I was just telling a friend that I am the goldilocks of pants! Regular is too long, petite is too short! But I'm seeing something similar with my skeins of Regia. The first sock was completed with plenty left. I started the 2nd one with a new ball, and i'm almost through it and still have a ways to go!!! What IS that? (love that yarn you're using BTW)
I'm enjoying your sock adventures..I feel like I'm learning a lot for when I start knitting socks :)
sorry about all your sock problems! that happened to me at first, where one was slightly larger, but not too large than the other sock. then i ran out of yarn, and couldnt find a match! eventually i did though!
Froggy - it's so great to see a perfectionist knitter! I think a saggy sock is a bad sock, because from my (limited) experience with knit socks, there's no going anywhere but bigger once they're off the needles. Good luck, and stick with it because I think those colors are fantastic!
I"m with you on customizing the fit - ill fitting socks will drive me nuts all day. I notice that your rewound yarn sort of looks like a doll - perhaps a few pins and some incense and you could voodoo those socks into behaving properly! :-)
Oh dear - but you did the right thing! Stupid yarn, brave froggy!
Oh, the pain of heels. I had to do the heel for my husband's sock three times and I kind of lost the enthusiasm after that. But your yarn is so much prettier, here's my whoop! whoop! to you!
Froggy, you are so brave !! Third time'll be the good time, i'm sure.
Ah yes gotta love sock knitting :) I have been meaning to try a pair of socks out of cascade fixation, figuring the elastic content would aid in the "perfect fit". Must get to that project in waiting somehow!
That yarn is so pretty...please forgive it for being naughty...
Fit is a big reason why I don't have any desire right now to knit socks. Ill fitting socks are so uncomfortable! Good for you for being brave enough to rip.
Wow Froggy...you really are a sock knitting machine!!! The colors are really nice =)
Just a note: Pricilla Gibson Rogers (Roberts? I can't think this morning) has size charts in _Simple Socks_ for every size feet - how many stitches to cast on in gauges from 5 to 10 (12?) st per inch. the only problem is that there's no ease - or lack thereof. I read in _The Purl Stitch_ that you should subtract 1/2-1 inch in circumference, so the sock fits tightly. I didn't do that with my first Gibson-Roberts sock, and it's a bit big for my taste. She also has suggestions for fitting the heels and toes.
