Clapotis

stitch closeup

Project Specs:
Pattern: Kate's Clapotis
Yarn Suggested: Lorna's Laces Lion and Lamb
Yarn Used: Artyarns Supermerino in color 106
Needle Size: US 5 addis
Gauge: 19 sts/4" St. st

I have really enjoyed watching my clapotis (as well as all of the others) progress and am still amazed at all of the different ways it can be worn. I have to admit that though I immediately fell in love with it the moment I saw in on Knitty, I was concerned that I would be fiddling with it constantly trying to find just the right position for it to be placed. I have long admired capes, shawls and other similar stylish items as they seem to be so effortlessly cast over shoulders and when I envisioned myself in a similar item I saw myself tripping over it and doing a header toward the concrete or just getting caught up in a slammed car door with the item of affection half on one side and half on the other flapping in the wind, rain or snow. Why so dramatic you ask? Well this has happened with many a mile long scarf that I have knitted. (i'm not the most graceful being, not that anyone thought i could be). Well, I must have matured in ability to make to sure that coat, scarf and other are within the interior of the car and the novel idea of placing one foot in front of the other solidly on the ground 'cause I have had no trouble with my clapotis. Or maybe its just the fact that I value it highly above all other objects felted by nature, mere neglect and act of hanging out my car door being agitated by the wind accompanied by a slaps with the ground (i kid you not I have a scarf that is felted at one end and i am tempted to felt the other end to balance it out as it doesn't look half bad, lol). I have barely taken it off my clapotis since it's completion and am guilty of building my wardrobe around my ability to wear it (daily). This clapotis is just magical. No matter where it falls its just right. From sometimes wrapping my head and neck completely to just holding it in the front, I am just lovin' it. The yarn is so soft and I really am taken by the way the colorway worked itself out. I am happy with the length, too. I should have known when the supposedly wrong side looks a brilliant as the right that this was going to be a winner. This has sparked what I know will be the beginning of a new realm of knits entering my wardrobe and I am quite excited. So much in fact that I feel there is only one thing to do when one finishes a clapotis and that is start another.

Update: For those looking for where to get the Artyarns Supermerino in color 106 or any of the other gorgeous colors they have, I purchased it from Knit Happens.

question: will we ever see your face?

Posted by: shobhana at December 19, 2004 08:57 AM

I love the color that you chose, it is gorgeous. I am not an experienced knitter, do you think this would be hard for me to make?

Posted by: marlo at December 19, 2004 09:07 AM

Once again, you dazzled us with a great project. I happen to have yarn in my stash (yes, i do) to make one or two. So, i'll be joining you clapotis owners soon.

Posted by: lynette at December 19, 2004 09:13 AM

looking luscious and lovely. i am not a scarf or shawl person; but, ever since i saw it on knitty, i've been a clapotis person. seeing yours has moved it up on the to knit list for sure.

Posted by: corine at December 19, 2004 09:15 AM

Ooh, I love that color.

And now you know the secret of Clapotis: you can't take it off once you complete it. And I thought about a second one, but I've got to finish the projects I kicked to the curb to make the first one.

Posted by: Iris at December 19, 2004 09:45 AM

Froggy, another triumph! Your Clapotis is beautiful, and looks so great on you. I want to make one!

Posted by: Nan at December 19, 2004 09:47 AM

Wowee...love it! Another amzing finished project...you are inspiring me to knit up the yarn I have in my stash for a clapotis sooner rather than later like planned!

Posted by: Dani at December 19, 2004 10:44 AM

Your fears about scarf length aren't unfounded! Isadora Duncan DIED by her scarf! I'm working on a Clap in Noro Cash Iroha and I'm so in love with the pattern. I'm already planning my next dozen.

Your Clapotis is divine. And I know how you feel. Another! And another! I have this urge to knit every yarn in my possession into a Clapotis. It's a good thing I have a lot of sisters.

Posted by: lyn at December 19, 2004 09:31 PM

Oh Froggie, that is one beautiful Clapotis! What a gorgeous colorway you chose--it's like spring.

Posted by: Silvia at December 19, 2004 10:33 PM

Gorgeous.

Where did you score the yarn ( I need some!), and what are you using for the second one? I've considered getting rid of some of that damned Kureyon by making Clapotis, but I want mine to be soft. Merino fits the bill!

I love your Clapotis. I just finished mine with Artyarns Supermerino color #105 (I'm in loooove with Artyarns Supermerino). Despite how much I love it, it's going to be a Christmas gift for the aunt who taught me to knit. I think I might go to the yarn store after Christmas and buy yarn to make one for myself!

Posted by: Kaitlin at December 20, 2004 01:01 PM

You are a popular Froggy! :) This Clapotis is so lovely! I hope you wore it today and wrapped it up really tight--it is so cold out there! brrr!

froggy, that looks just great on you! i love your color selection! it seems everything you make is just magical! i really wanted to try making a clapotis, but i am still stuck in old projects and didnt want to overwhelm myself! im glad you love it!

Posted by: erika at December 23, 2004 11:09 AM

I have 400 yards of a sport yarn. Do you think that would be enough to make it?

Posted by: wanda at December 23, 2004 05:57 PM

Oh, wow! I'm just starting Clapotis with ArtYarns Supermerino too! I'm using color 105, which is a pink/green varigated. Yours look fabulous--I can't wait! I noticed you used size 5 needles--are you a really loose knitter? I am, but I was going to start with 7's. Maybe I should reconsider.

Whatever you did, it sure worked! It's just gorgeous. Well done.

Posted by: Laurie at December 24, 2004 02:25 AM

Wonderful Clapotis! I started mine today in Schaefer Yarns Helene, Mary Pickford Colorway! Wish me luck! I hope to be as glamorous as you!
