Froggy Knits

It's the Great Pumpkin!

It was not my intention to knit a garment worthy of what I must call my personal Halloween BOO! It just happened! I don't know if you were able to catch It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on tv this week. And yes, that is my copy. I don't know why we watched it on tv and then proceeded it to watch it on dvd too. Sometimes there is no logical reason why one finds something fun.

Well, if you ever wanted to know what the Great Pumpkin really looks like or just care for bit of fright click here. And here is the Great Pumpkin in a better mood (drawn and carved by my mini and she still has all of her fingers however I have and increased amount of grey hair, whew). I'll be hiding the kid's carving kit next year. I know, the sweater is still scary nonetheless. I think I know what I will be wearing on Halloween night. And no, I won't need a coat and may not be able to wear it if it's above freezing. This sweater is hea.....vy!

Project Specs:
Pattern: Rebecca Green Ribbed Sweater
Suggested Yarn: GGH Zermatt
Yarn Used: GGH Zermatt color 08
Needle Size: US 35 Addis
Gauge: 5-6 sts/10cm (does it really matter when using 35's)

Now this is not to say that this is not a great pattern. I love the version pictured in the original pattern pic. Just something happens when you knit it in orange and then finish in October. I love this sweater no matter how much I joke about. It's in need of a monster blocking job. My stitches always need a good blocking to make them behave and these need it 35x more! I reduced the amount of stitches for the body below the armholes knit in the round. I know this one is going to grow due to weight and fiber, but I think by doing so I lost a bit of the looseness that I actually like in the pattern pic. With the original bulk, I could barely put my arms straight down. Next time I'll have to find a happy medium. Another lesson learned. Oh well, this pumpkin has left the patch as-is and ain't lookin' back!

Have a safe and Happy Halloween.

I love your sweater. No, you won't need to wear it with a coat. Hey, no fair hiding behind the pumpkins. :)

ps - your mini made the CUTEST jack-o-lantern EVER!

Posted by: Lara at October 29, 2004 10:45 PM

I made my boyfriend look at mini's pumpkin. so cute! I've never heard of that kind of GGH. Where did you find the yarn? I accidentally wore a bright orange sweatshirt today and understand totally.

That is an awesome sweater. Now I might have to add "sweater knit on huge needles" to my ever growing list of things I want to knit. There just isn't enough time!

Your Halloween timing is impeccable.

I love that sweater. Orange is one of my favorite colors. I'm sure you'll get a lot of wear out of it once halloween is over. The jack o'lantern photos are great!

Posted by: amy at October 30, 2004 09:19 AM

That's a great sweater (and I know that Claudia loves the color...hee hee)! Please tell me that you're going to wear it tomorrow. You gotta.

P.S. It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie is among my favorite of the cartoons. But first comes Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown. As soon as I get back to the States for a visit I'll buy them on DVD!

Awsome sweater, Froogy! ^_^ I love the colour. You'll be so stylish for Halloween (though I think it would look good andy time of year)! I must say, I really learn a lot from read your reports on your projects... by the time I make a sweater, I should be well prepared. Cheers to you!

I was just wondering what happened to your orange sweater! This sweater was the one that inspired me originally to make the rose zimmer sweater that I just finished, although the project turned out completely different in the end. I'm a big fan of orange, so I think it's lovely! And it's awesome that you finished it just in time for Halloween!

That's a FABULOUS Halloween sweater! And Thanksgiving too.

Posted by: jackie at October 30, 2004 11:16 AM

Aw, Mini's jack-o-lantern is SO cute! That looks like a great, quick pattern and it looks really great on you!

Posted by: Vici at October 30, 2004 11:26 AM

That sweater really rocks! The orange is a lovely fall color and the chunky weight is perfect for when the chill of fall is in the air and no coat is required! It's ironic you finished it in time for Halloween...lol!

love the sweater! great colour and it just looks so comfortable!

Posted by: mrspilkington at October 30, 2004 02:17 PM

How totally cute and so aprapos! I'm so bummed I missed that on TV. I will have to get the dvd for my munchkin.

Posted by: Alysia at October 30, 2004 02:27 PM

That is a great sweater. When I was younger I hated orange and now I am strangely drawn to it. I guess they were wrong when they said "When I am an old woman I will wear purple" For me I suppose that it is orange. Well....I'm not quite old yet.

Posted by: Samantha at October 30, 2004 06:26 PM

I love it! I, too, can only wear so much orange in October without feeling silly, but still, it's pretty cool and very distinctive. :)

Happy Halloween to you and your daughter! Great pumpkins and a fabulously seasonal sweater. Aren't the Peanuts great? I made sure to catch the episode last week, and I should just buy the DVD! Enjoy your sweater...it should keep you stylishly warm tonight!

I love the sweater. Perfect for fall. Chunky with lots of texture. Fall is so barren after the leaves fall - this sweater is a perfect contrast to that. Great job!

Fab-o sweater, Froggy-girl! It looks very very warm and cozy. Thanks for the info about the scarf along - I will be joining you soon. Hopefully that will make me "scarf" more than just my Halloween candy! Hee hee.

If that's a pumpkin it is sure one d**n fine pumkin...You look great in that sweater, I on the other hand could never pull it off!

Posted by: Georgia at October 31, 2004 11:41 PM

It looks good on you and orange is a very optimistic colour! Wow, can't imagine what it's like knitting with such huge needles but I must say the sweater turned out great :-) Yours makes the original version look dull in comparison *lol*

I LOVE the orange sweater! It is SO cute! You aren't limited to Halloween. It is a fall color. Very very cute.

Posted by: Laurie at November 1, 2004 12:17 PM

You will totally stand out! That is my kind of sweater.....Looks great.

Posted by: lisa at November 1, 2004 01:52 PM

so cute!

Posted by: pixie at November 1, 2004 02:52 PM

heehee you are cracking me up with the Charlie Brown References.

It may feel heavy with our warmer than usual October temps...but believe me...romping in the snow with mini me wearing Orangie...you'll love it.
I think it turned out really good...and it looks really good on you!!

Posted by: heather at November 1, 2004 03:41 PM

Aw, thank you! It was hella fun to make and rather good to taste. I've been reading your blog for a while now, and you're such fun! The recycled poncho is absolutely the loveliest, and all your projects look fun and cozy....Thanks again!

That sweater wants you to have a cup of hot chocolate liberally laced with creme de menthe. I swear. It really does. ;)
