April 23, 2005Mini's favorite scarf goes up in smoke?I finished this scarf ages ago and it has definitely become mini's fav (though i have to admit that i did not enjoy knitting it). I decided to take a pic of her it before it was completely picked apart as she's started to come home from school with pieces of it asking me to "knit them back on please...isn't that cute?) The reason this scarf has come "top of mind" though is 'cause someone mentioned that they thought Sirdar Fizz was recalled due to the fact that it is highly flammable. They thought that an email was going around about it. Has anyone else heard about this? I must say that I also heard that its certain colors and maybe dye lots, but all that really doesn't matter. That scarf is history in mind if it has the remotest chance of harm. And I don't have the ball band anyway. I'll have to knit up a replacement scarf. Don't want to see mini's face when I tell her that the scarf has to "go away", though I'm sure she'll grow to love a less dangerous pink number in the future. I found this yarn in stash and for the longest time could not figure out why I would buy one ball of yarn especially this type as I don't enjoy knitting with novelty though it is so soft and appealing to look at. But, as it turns out this yarn was to be knit along with the sirdar fizz in the above scarf. Its so funny 'cause I remember knitting the scarf feeling that "something was missing", lol. Oh well, at least that leaves this yarn for a potential boa though I'm not quit sure I want to use it for such now. I don't think the fluff is going to be long enough to simulate a boa. I must say it was a mess trying to find that end though, but eventually I did and now the ball is rewound and ready to go. Hmmm, wonder what I'll make with it. I know, it would make the perfect...BUNNY!

I don't like novelty yarns neither ... they are expensive, difficult to work with ... but sometimes are beautiful knitted up, though. I like mini's head band. Posted by: Agnes at April 23, 2005 03:11 AMI would have thought that pretty much all synthetic fibres were quite flamable? But I don't have a child so I haven't had a need to learn about this sort of stuff! When I was in Vietnam recently we used the flame test to check out whether fabrics were synthetic or natural (eg, silk, wool)- the synthetic stuff just creates melted goo when you put a flame to it. Posted by: Clementine at April 23, 2005 03:15 AMSorry to hear about the scarf. Doesn't she look faboulous in it?! Great head band too. She's one snazzy dresser! I think you're right to get rid of it though. Posted by: Adele at April 23, 2005 06:07 AMI believe it was Bernat's "Fur Out" that was recalled, although I don't know why that particular synthetic would be any more flammable than another. Posted by: Pam at April 23, 2005 06:15 AMI think Sirdar Fizz was recalled, yes. Maybe this helps? http://www.livejournal.com/community/knitting/4179116.html Poor Mini... See the Sirdar website here: http://www.sirdar.co.uk/ Hi Froggy dear-- so sorry about Mini's scarf. Perhaps the take away can be very stealth--you can replace it with another wonderful thing that will get her mind off of the scarf? (Bunny stuffing, perhaps? She is so good at that!) Am I going to see you at Sheep & Wool? I would love to meet up with you again! We had so much fun last time :) ...and I saw your comment on someone else's blog about Lucky Clover. I will not be done with this sweater till next year the rate I am going, so feel free to join us at any time! Have a nice (rainy) weekend! Posted by: Lolly at April 23, 2005 07:07 AMHow disappointing about Mini's scarf. Here's a link to the info. about the recall. They say they'll replace with a new version of the yarn if you mail in even completed projects. http://www.needlenook.on.ca/sirdar.htm#Fizz Posted by: amy at April 23, 2005 08:45 AMDitch that flame-scarf! It's not worth it - and Mini will love a replacement, for sure! Love th pink - I must say! (Oooh, just read the comment above mine - they'll replace your yarn - woo hoo!!! That way Mini can pick out her own replacement, and she will love it just as much). Posted by: Anne-Caroline at April 23, 2005 08:56 AMLord Mini's a cutie pie. So sad about her scarf, but what can you do? Safety first. ;-) Posted by: Jenny at April 23, 2005 09:41 AMYes, it's been recalled (as everyone else said :-).) Poor Mini, but I hope that she loves her other scarf just as much. Just as an aside: my grandmother (not the knitting grandmother about whom I blog, but my other grandmother) made some ponchos trimmed with the Bernat yarn that was recalled at the same time. She told me that she heard about the recall (where and from whom, I want to know) and she did a little test burn. She claims that the yarn just fizzled, it didn't burn. I don't, however, blame you for a moment for deep-sixing Mini's scarf. Personally, I think that she's wrong to give those ponchos without telling the parents about the potential yarn issue. Posted by: Colleen at April 23, 2005 09:45 AMHow cute that she wanted you to "knit the pieces back on". aww! The pink fluffy yarn would, indeed, make a fantastic bunny :) Posted by: Monica at April 23, 2005 09:47 AMYes, it has been recalled... and unfortuanately, it goes up like a dry christmas tree. Send it back to Sirdar or pick something else out and surprise Mini with a new scarf. Something fluffy and.... pink. ;) Posted by: Holly at April 23, 2005 10:13 AMI am sure Mini will understand, so long as she is "distracted" by a new FO or a job stuffing bunnies. She is such a cutie! Posted by: Dani at April 23, 2005 10:42 AMyes a soft Bunny to cuddle and for sure Mini will love it ! Posted by: karen at April 23, 2005 11:01 AMYes, it was recalled. I posted about a month or two ago with a link to Sirdar's message that they'd like you to mail them anything made with Fizz and they'd replace it (not sure what that means). I tried burning a yarn with similar composition (nothing happened). Posted by: Lauren at April 23, 2005 11:13 AMI can't stand novelty yarns either... I used them when i first learned to knit.. and now they annoy me. Mostly because they are everywhere. Too bad with the scarf, she looks so cute in it! I think you'd better hop to it...knit her a better pink scarf or else. ;-) Posted by: claudia at April 23, 2005 02:26 PMI think someone is addicted to bunnies! haha. I did hear that about certain types of novelty yarn being flammable. I guess it would depend on the type of synthetic fibre. Probably a good idea to be careful, anyway. It does looks super cute on Mini, though! I hope she isn't too heartbroken if the scarf has to "go away." Posted by: Missy at April 23, 2005 02:53 PMI haven't heard that about the scarf yarn, but better to be on the safe side. I just read about a yarn in the Knitter's Review that which looked similar to feathers...might make a good boa! Here's the link to the article: The yarn is GGH Intension. I am sure the new scarf will be a hit as long as it is pink and fluffy! Posted by: Niki at April 23, 2005 03:30 PMToo bad about the Mini's scarf, it's adorable, Posted by: eyeleen at April 23, 2005 04:48 PMYeah, a lady from my home town (S. Bend, IN) was on the news the last time I was home warning people about the yarn being highly flammable. Somehow (which she refused to explain) she found out the hard way that it catches fire easily. How sad! She had made a whole baby suit out of it for one of her grandkids and in her "demonstration", she set that on fire... flaming baby suit :( Posted by: Kiri at April 23, 2005 05:04 PMIt's too bad about Mini's scarf, but it is adorable. Posted by: Liz at April 23, 2005 05:31 PMDitto other comments. BTW, an LYS owner had a couple of her suppliers test the Fizz. They lit it up (back when it was snowing) and this stuff disintegrated in no time. I have heard that Sirdar is working on a "less flammable" substitute...whatever that means. Posted by: Sandra at April 23, 2005 07:04 PMi can just see mini asking you to knit it back together - that is gorgeous. At least it has become a well worn, well loved accessory and I can already see that she is going to be a handbag and shoe junkie at a later age - a lady must have her accessories now! Posted by: jacqueline at April 23, 2005 08:56 PMYep, it's being recalled. I work in a yarn shop and we have some little flyers and a poster about the recall. It is *really* flammable by the way. One of the other ladies I work with took some home and tested it. The match didn't even have to get very close before the yarn caught on fire.... Posted by: jillz at April 23, 2005 09:47 PMaw the scarf was cute (I like to think novelty scarves belong only on children)...but safety is more important. I actually saw the other recalled yarn, Bernat's Fur Out, on clearance at some craft store after the recall...I'm hoping nobody ends up buying it, there wasn't even a warning posted. Posted by: Tina at April 24, 2005 12:53 AMI know how this novelty yarn would look like. I have a similar finished scarf here: http://vintagefusionhandcrafts.blogspot.com/2005/02/dressing-up.html For me personally, i think it's a fabulous little black number dresser! Posted by: emy at April 25, 2005 02:40 AMIt is being recalled. There have been notices in local yarn stores here (Calif.). You can send the yarn back to Sirdar and they will send a new non-flammable replacement. Dont' feel bad--I bought some for my daughter to knit a bag. email me if you'd like any more info from the notice Posted by: Lisa W. at April 25, 2005 04:03 AMaaw...poor mini. Knit her up the new one before you have to take away the old one...it is cute! Posted by: heather at April 25, 2005 08:40 AMIf you want to reknit in something very similar, from the picture it looks exactly like Crystal Palace Dragonfly in style and color. I'm not sure about Dragonfly's flammability, but it hasn't been recalled. Posted by: Molly at April 25, 2005 01:04 PMPoor Mini! That is just adorable that she is so appreciative of your knitting. Enjoy it while you still can! Take it from someone who was "too cool" for her mom's handmade stuff for a good portion of her life. At least I've come around, and started making my own things now too! Hope you can figure out a good replacement. Posted by: molly at April 25, 2005 07:55 PMFizz did indeed get recalled, at the store where I work we packaged it all back up and sent it back to them. It's the frizzy viscose puffy bits that are dangerous. If you can get a ball or two of Gedifra Carioca, it is wonderful held together with a soft eyelash yarn like that, and will make a really spectacular boa. :) Posted by: Mandy at April 25, 2005 09:32 PM |
