Mags in the Mail

Subscribed to Knitting a while back and have just started receiving issues, however nothing really spoke to me at first glance in this issue, but I do think it has a lot of interesting attributes for a new mag.

I do enjoy the yarn reviews, knitting competitions, Ask Jean (Jean Moss),new yarn sources that appear in this mag versus the US mags I see in my local bookstores, large print patterns and what seems to be a more relaxed way to notate patterns (not the typical let me use the smallest font and put this whole 5 page pattern on one page that I often see.) On most accounts, charts are on one page. And they are printed at the largest size possible and there are many pictures of the garment from different angles. As you can tell I am wooed by large print and many pictures. Especially when it comes to the techniques section which has large pics of the stitches you are manipulating in order to learn the technique rather than the tiny pics that make it impossible for me see. Is is just me? However, I do like more of the patterns from the previous issues that I have seen.

And one of my favorite sections is the out and about section with progressive knitting happening like student fashion photographers joining Knitting photo shoot and a piece called Craft Rocks at the V&A and this pic from Graduate Fashion Week:

Ok, how can the same scanner that scanned the book covers turn out an pic like this?!?

And then the love affair with Phildar continues!

Phildar always speaks to me. Now, I just have narrow down my next must knits from these two.
So much to love for Phildar!

Yes, aren't Phildar patterns the BEST???!!! They really make we want to learn to speak/read French.

I need to brush up on my French, so I can knit a couple things from the Phildar summer issue. The silk halter top is calling my name, as is the tube top on the cover.

That knitting magazine looks very interesting. Is it a UK-based mag?

I like that tank on the cover of Knitting. Where did you find it? If it's a UK mag, I'll have to be on the lookout for it this summer...

Does the love affair with Phildar ever end?! I bought a couple of issues of Knitting and feel the same way about them as you do. The patterns are okay, the articles I love, and the pictures are excellent.

Phildar magazines are great. They have such flair. Your new acquisitions have inspired me to check the new ones out. I definitely want to get the summer issue and the new Tricotez Calin. Which designs are you interested in making?

Do you by any chance have the info on how to subscribe to Knitting? I've looked everywhere, asked my Canadian friends to look, just can't find the magazine...would greatly appreciate it if you do. Lovely site, by the way!

That spotted effect from the magazine scan is a common problem for almost all scanners. The ink on magazine and newspaper pages are placed down in grids of spots. The scanner scans in long stripes across the page. When the two patterns combine, you get that odd pattern, usually refered to as a moire. It's not a defect in your scanner, it's just the nature of scanning certain types of print pages. You can reduce the moire by scanning the image at a 12 degree rotation, or checking to see if your scanning software offers a "magazine" setting.

:o)

Knitting is a UK mag, I've found it in WH Smiths. I quite liked it (I bought the copy with the Craft Rocks article too.)
